Once only a dream of inventors and visionaries, flight is now considered one of the most convenient ways for long-distance travel, easily surpassing both train and boat travel. Due to the relatively quick nature of travel on a flight, what used to be a multi-month journey can now be completed in a matter of hours. Although feared by some, flights are statistically very safe. With a safety rate nineteen times that of driving in a car; flying is one of the safest ways to travel.

Flights are generally divided into two categories, passenger flights and cargo flights. Over 87,000 flights take off every day from the United States alone. Almost everyone can travel on a passenger flight, from infants to the elderly. Some restrictions are occasionally applied due to health reasons, or for those with previous violent incidents in airports.

Passenger flights can be either domestic or international. A domestic flight is from city to city within one country, an international flight is, as it sounds, international. International flights are generally more expensive than domestic flights due to the longer distance, but this is not necessarily always the case. A final type of passenger flight is a charter flight, or a private flight. Cargo flights are used by many large international companies as well as postal services to move goods, letters and packages quickly around the world. First used for airmail, planes used for cargo are outfitted differently than passenger planes, including a stronger cabin floor, more wheels that allow them to land in non-traditional locations, and a higher tail, which allows people to load cargo directly in through the back.
